According to International Data Corporation (IDC), an UK-based market intelligence firm, global spending on cloud computing is predicted to increase by 25 percent and reach 21 billion by the end of this year. From documents and images to Office solutions – everything is migrating to the cloud these days. With the surge of cloud-dependant devices such as smartphones and tablets in the IT sector, even antivirus software are choosing the cloud way in order to provide better protection against malicious attacks. In the US, technologically advancing states such as Florida are fast embracing cloud-based antivirus model, with IT companies in Tampa being the front-runner as usual. It can be downloaded just the same way we download native apps. Once downloaded, it draws support from the cloud to deliver antivirus capabilities. This saves precious disk space, as the storage and memory footprint is very less than what a native antivirus needs.

2. Double Layer of Protection: Running multiple native programs may affect the speed of your device, as it tends to trigger software conflicts. However, you can use more than one cloud-based product without having to worry about slowdowns or conflicts.

3. No Updates Required: Native antivirus models often ask users to keep it up to date, as an outdated version makes your system more vulnerable to attacks. Being hosted on the cloud, developers can easily add updates and patches to these new-age antivirus models. Cons of Cloud-based Antivirus:

1. Limited Scanning Ability: The operating system (OS) may prevent the cloud-based models from scanning the entire device. The scan will remain only to the core OS files and the ones stored inside the memory. This stops them from recognizing any virus in achieved files.

2. Requires An Internet Connection: Unlike a native model that runs without an Internet connection, cloud-based antivirus software is completely dependent on it. This is a big problem with users, who are using portable devices that don’t have an Internet connection at present.

3. Doesn’t Run On The Background: While most native antivirus software is terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) programs, cloud-based models are needed to be kept open in order to be functional.
